This morning I observed that the ratio of men to women is a bit more drastic than I thought down in the financial district. I walked to work via Jackson instead of Van Buren this morning and I think that was part of why I noticed the difference. It's not so much the under 35-40 crowd, it's the over 35-40 crowd. All of the over 40 people I saw were men...mind you there were a few women here and there, but mostly everyone I saw who appeared to be over 40 was male.
Is this because I am in the financial district or is the ratio truly that overwhelming currently? I also found it interesting that all the the under 40 were in jeans (for the most part) and all of the over 40 were in suits...generation gap indeed.
Thoughts?

Country snow - City snow
Chicago got hit with a big storm yesterday, I think about a foot of snow. Luckily it's the lighter snow, but a foot of it is heavy.
I finally rolled out of bed at 6:25 this morning knowing that I needed to do some shoveling. Usually the bf does the shoveling, but he is not feeling so well. I also wanted to get a good workout in so I figured shoveling for half an hour would do the trick.
I went on outside and everywhere was white, fluffy snow. The blowing snow had started but not gotten too bad. Though my boots were not completely covered, the snow was above my ankles as I walked to get the shovel. I opted to shovel the steps a bit, bad idea. Lots of garbage and leaves where there. Oh well.
Once I got up to the top of the basement stairs, I began the shoveling. Usually we shovel the entire sidewalk on the side and the front of the apartment building. I was not going to be able to do that in 30 or 45 minutes. The snow kept getting heavier, and I was running out of room, and I only had about 1/8 of the area shoveled.
You see the problem with city snow is based on room limitations. You can't throw it in the street because the plows will just throw it back up and it creates a bigger mess. Or with the side streets, you never know if/when the will come and plow those.
Another problem with city snow is that people walk through the snow on the sidewalks. They need to, I understand, but it is so much more difficult to shovel snow that has been walked through than snow that is fresh.
So I ran out of room quickly, with each section of sidewalk I was shoveling. Then when I got to the main street, people had already created a path, so I tried to make it a bit wider and nicer, only problem was, it was packed down.
After about 45 minutes of shoveling I had to be done. I was running late for getting ready for work and people kept walking through the areas that I hadn't shoveled. My car was only halfway uncovered but I don't need it until 6 tonight.
Ok I started this post about 5 hours ago and I just can't finish it...the moral of the story is...country snow = more room for the snow to go, less people tromping on it...city snow = no room, no understanding, and too many people

Starting up again
Wow, major fail for the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010 in blogging. Things have just been so crazy and hectic. Trying to find a balance has been difficult to say the least.
My goals for the next few months keep changing. I find it amusing that part of my counseling role is to help people define goals and steps to achieve them, yet I keep reorganizing my own goals. Practice what you preach I suppose.
I've found that I truly am at a turning point in my life. I'm struggling to continue finding inspiration at my work place. The closer I get to the halfway point of my internship, the more I wish I could just focus on that, get it over, and get a job in my new career. I understand that is not an option. I also understand that the world will not be perfect for me once I embark on this new career.
I currently sit at 334.5 of the 700 hours that I need. By the end of this week I will have hit the 350 hour mark...halfway. I have so many hours each week now that the second half will go by faster than the first half. I also took the department exam this past Saturday. The DPE is a requirement at my school, cumulative exam of everything I've learned in grad school. I believe I passed, but will find out in less than 2 weeks. Come April (17th to be exact) I have an exam that is double the length of the DPE to get my certification. The NCE (National Counseling Exam) is required in IL to get your state license. This is how close I am.
Come May I need to take one more class and finish up my internship hours. I'm averaging about 20 hours a week right now, 17.5 more weeks after this week and I'm complete...so in June, I need to slow down my hours to last until the end of July. And here I was worried about even getting to 700 hours!
See, even when I was planning on discussing the work stuff, the internship stuff takes over. I'm in such a weird place in my life right now...but that's for another post.
